Camera surveillance systems (also called closed circuit television, CCTV) is gaining ground in Japan. Recently, there was much fanfare over the unveiling of a new type of vending machine — complete with camera surveillance, an alarm, and an emergency phone. This was hailed as a new tool to fight crime. Howevever, soon after, the vending machine was vandalized. “Police report the top-mounted security camera wiring had been cut and the camera was dangling over the front of the machine. “Surveillance society” (in Japanese) had been sprayed in black paint on the side of the machine. The word “watch” was sprayed on the back of the machine.”
