In the News: I’m Testifying at a D.C. Council Committee Hearing on CCTV
UPDATE: Here’s my post discussing the hearing and the various witnesses’ testimony.
Today, Monday, June 2, at 11 am, the D.C. Council’s Public Safety and Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on the “Video Interoperability for Public Safety” (“VIPS”) system. VIPS is Mayor Fenty’s plan to connect a system of 5,200 surveillance cameras watching District schools, public housing, and more under the District’s Homeland Security agency. However, the city has not yet set up a regulatory system for this massive surveillance program. I will be testifying at the hearing about the privacy, civil liberty and security questions associated with VIPS and other camera surveillance systems.
