    Happy Data Privacy Day 2011!

    January 28 is Data Privacy Day. Take the time to think about how privacy is important in your life and how you can protect your rights from being infringed upon. Please also take the time to donate to any number of organizations out there trying to protect your privacy rights.

    Visit the official site to find events near your area. Here are a few highlights in the United States and internationally:

    New York
    On Friday, January 28, 2011, the Institute for Information Law & Policy at New York Law School is planning “Whose Data Is It Anyway?” a Data Privacy Day Event which will feature Professors James Grimmelman, Dan Hunter, and Andrew Lupu, who will engage with students in an intellectual game modeled off of the British television show “Whose Line is it Anyway.” The game portion of the event will be followed by a Q&A. Time and Location: 2:30 – 5pm, Events Center W201, New York Law School.

    Indiana
    Data Privacy Day at Indiana University will include the following discussions: Forgetting: A New Challenge for the 21st Century featuring Professor Fred Cate, Director Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research; Health Information Exchange and What it Means to You featuring Stanley Crosley, Co-Director of the Center for Law Ethics and Applied Research in Health Information; and a Web Site Privacy Notice Policy Announcement by Eric Cosens and Scott Wilson.  This event will take place on January 28, 2011 from 9:45 am to 2:00 pm and you can attend in person on the first floor of the Indiana Memorial Union at IU Bloomington OR online.

    Privacy by Design: Time to Take Control

    Come to the third annual Privacy by Design Challenge – “Privacy by Design: Time to Take Control.”  An international roster of privacy leaders has taken Dr. Cavoukian’s challenge to share their learnings and describe how their organizations demonstrate respect for user privacy.  In the demo area, you will learn about a variety of new privacy-enhancing technologies and services. In light of the recent adoption of the Commissioner’s “Privacy by Design Resolution” by a worldwide assembly of data protection authorities, this is an event you will not want to miss.  Join Dr. Cavoukian and her distinguished guests on Data Privacy Day, January 28, 2011 at the Toronto Board of Trade, 77 Adelaide Street West, Toronto, ON M5X 1C1, for this important event. Registration and demo area open at 7:30 am and the program will be held from 8:30 – 11:30 am.

      On January 31, the Senate passed, by unanimous consent, S. Res. 35, a resolution expressing support for the designation of January 28, 2011, as National Data Privacy Day. The text of the resolution is not yet available from the GPO.
